Purposes |
This symposium focuses on current situation of global warming,
meaning of Kyoto Protocol, pathway toward low carbon society
(LCS) and its feasibility. We'd like to discuss what kinds
of countermeasures we need to take action now to achieve LCS
based on long-term perspectives. |
Background |
Since Kyoto Protocol has brought into effect on Feb.16th
2005, concrete countermeasures to tackle with global warming
are required. At UNFCCC COP/MOP1 and COP11 in Montreal during
Nov.28th to Dec.9th, delegates adopted the ground rules for
administering the Kyoto Protocol and reached agreement on
text for future action. |
In Japan, a research project on "Japan Low Carbon Society
Scenarios toward 2050" (Global Environment Fund, MoEJ)
has been conducted since Apr. 2004 and more than 50 researchers
have investigated pathways to realize LCS from various aspects.
UK published Energy White paper "Our energy future -
creating a low carbon economy" in 2003 to put a path
to cut the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by about
2050 with real progress by 2020, such as UK Energy Research
Center (UKERC) was established in 2004 to achieve sustainable
energy economy and the 40% House project studies behavioural
and technological changes in the search for how UK households can meet the 60% target. |
